The rotary coal dryer is mainly used for drying coal materials with high water content, fine particle size and high viscosity (slime, flotation tail coal, mixed coal, pressure filtration tail coal, final clean coal, medium coal, or concentrate powder). Rotary coal dryers tumble coal through a controlled stream of hot gas (direct or indirect heat) inside a rotating drum. Safety relies heavily on strict oxygen level control (using inert gas/flue gas), robust seals, temperature monitoring, and explosion protection systems.
The most common type, the rotary drum dryer, works similarly to those used for other minerals but with heightened safety protocols. Wet coal enters one end of a rotating, inclined cylinder. Lifters inside shower the coal through a stream of hot gas.
